PDT is a process by which a solution, Aminolevulinic acid (ALA: Levulan), is applied to the skin and activated by a specific wavelength of light (blue light, red light, IPL or pulse dye laser). Photodynamic treatment may be used for:
Levulan is preferentially absorbed by abnormal cancer cells, sebaceous glands, or damaged aging cells. Levulan is a painless, clear fluid that is left on the skin from several minutes to several hours. This incubation period varies depending on the targeted condition. The Levulan is then exposed to the various light or laser source. Discomfort is variable with this treatment. A cooling fan is used during treatment to minimize the discomfort. After the treatment your skin will be red. In some cases mild swelling may occur. You must avoid sunlight or bright indoor light for 48 hours after the treatment. You may experience some peeling and crusting (especially if you have skin cancers). There is no scarring and no systemic side effects. For acne treatment, optimal results are obtained with 2-4 treatments at 2-3 week intervals. To achieve maximum improvement of sun damage, mottled pigmentation, skin tone and texture, a series of 3 treatments, 2-4 weeks apart is most effective. PDT is a well tolerated and non-invasive treatment with excellent clinical and cosmetic outcomes.
