Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal Jacksonville Laser hair removal has become a popular and permanent way for patients to address unwanted hair on the body. At The Spa & Laser Center at Southside Dermatology, we encourage patients to learn about our laser therapy for hair reduction and removal using one of many devices, including the:
  • GentleMax Pro laser
  • 755 nm Alexandrite (for lighter skin)
  • 1064 nm Nd:YAG (for darker skin)
The laser emits light that can damage the hair shaft and follicle without affecting the surrounding skin as it targets the pigmentation. Hair removal lasers are designed to treat the thicker, longer, darker hairs on the skin that contain the most melanin, a substance that easily absorbs laser light. In most cases, light-colored hairs do not respond as well to treatment as darker, more pigmented hair. Once the hair has been treated, it is either permanently removed or replaced with vellus hair that is fine and light in color, making a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the skin.

With laser hair removal, several sessions are required for effective results. This is because the treated hair is in the growing anagen phase, which is just one of many cycles in the hair growth process. Hair in the dormant stage does not respond to treatment, so scheduling multiple sessions approximately four to six weeks apart is best. Patients can treat any area of the body including the face, bikini line, underarms, arms, legs, back, and chest, just to name a few. Not only can the laser treatment help in eliminating unwanted hair, but it can also be used on the skin where ingrown hair is a problem such as the pubic area, the beard, and the neck.

Dr. Mary Pentel often encourages patients to follow these specific pretreatment steps before undergoing laser hair removal:
  • Do not tan two weeks before the procedure
  • Do not wax four weeks before the procedure
  • Do not tweeze four weeks before the procedure
  • Do not thread at least four weeks before the procedure
  • Do not use Accutane at least six months before the procedure
  • Do not perform electrolysis four weeks before the procedure
  • Do not shave two days before the procedure
