Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT-100)

SRT 100 - informational Video

The SRT-100 laser uses low-dose radiation to effectively destroy non-melanoma skin cancers in a manner that is free from pain and scarring. Because cutting is not involved, patients heal quickly and there are no stitches involved.
Each year, over 9 million people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancers. The most common skin cancers are squamous cell cancers and basal cell cancers. There are several treatment options including surgery and MOHS. However surgery involves cutting tissue and can be painful with possible disfiguring scars and downtime. For this reason, many people in need of skin cancer treatment often seek alternate options, especially non-surgical ones like superficial radiation therapy.

What is Superficial Radiation Therapy?

The SRT-100™ delivers a precise, calibrated dose of Superficial Radiation Therapy that only goes skin deep. This low-dose of radiation safely destroys non-melanoma skin cancer (basal cell skin cancers and squamous cell skin cancers) without damaging healthy surrounding tissue. There is no cutting or stitching, less risk for infection, and no need for reconstructive plastic surgery to repair surgical scars.

This low-energy radiation penetrates to only a very shallow depth of 5 mm to reach the skin cancer cells while sparing underlying structures such as muscle, bone and cartilage. This allows the surrounding, healthy tissue to be preserved even as the infected, cancerous tissue is destroyed. Also, no other organs are affected. The radiation in SRT is not as powerful or deep as the version utilized in treating other types of cancer like breast or prostate cancer. Therefore it is a safe, alternative to more invasive procedures. You can receive this type of superficial radiation treatment even if you have had previous radiation treatments for other types of cancers.
This particular radiation therapy, SRT-100, is FDA-approved for treating any area of your body where non-melanoma skin cancer has developed, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

Who is a candidate for Superficial Radiation Therapy?

Superficial radiotherapy treats non-melanoma cancers located on the surface of your skin nearly anywhere on your body:

SRT is especially suited for treating skin cancers on your body where surgery may leave unsightly scars such as the nose, lips, ears, eyelids, and face. In addition, SRT is beneficial in areas such as the scalp, hands, or lower legs where a large surgical closure may be difficult. SRT is also ideal for the elderly patient with many other medical conditions. In addition, you don’t have to stop any of your medications including blood thinners for SRT.

What are the advantages of SRT?

  • Painless because there is no needles or cutting
  • High success rate (almost the same as surgery)
  • Short treatment sessions (5-10 minute sessions)
  • No needles because no anesthesia is necessary
  • Minimal scarring because there is no cutting
  • Little downtime because there are no bleeding, sutures or restrictions
  • Virtually no side effects
Superficial Radiation Therapy can safely be performed in a physician’s office with proper training and certification.
